Research Support Office Overview

The HLS Research Support Office provides support for academic staff and research students in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences to undertake the high quality, high impact research and knowledge exchange activities. It also supports the Faculty in the development and delivery of the strategies which lead to these activities.

We are based in the Gatehouse at the Headington Hill site. Please drop in and see us or call first if there is someone you particularly wish to see. We also hotdesk at Marston Road (MRG.58 – ext. 8148) – see below for details.

  • supports the Associate Dean (Research & Knowledge Exchange) in the organisation, implementation and promotion of the Faculty’s research and knowledge exchange strategies, policies and procedures
  • maintains records for external evaluation of research, such as the Research Excellence Framework (REF)
  • manages the Research Support Office, which comprises a Research Grants Officer, Research and Consultancy Support Officer, and a Research Administrator.
  • co-ordinates the appointment of Visiting Academic research staff (Jennie).
  • Carries out Faculty research inductions for new research staff on research policies, procedures, training & development, and available support (Jennie).

Research Grants Officer

  • provides support for bidding for external funding by academic staff including support with the University costing tool (pFACT) and seeing bids through the Faculty and University approval processes to submission
  • liaises with the University Research and Business Development Office (RBDO) to support these activities
  • acts as secretary to the Research & Knowledge Exchange Committee (RKEC)
  • assists researchers with finding suitable funding opportunities

Research and Consultancy Support Officer

  • provides support for bidding for external consultancy and CPD work including support with the University costing tool (pFACT) and seeing bids or tenders through the Faculty and University approval processes to submission
  • promotes the research of the Faculty through relevant events, literature and social media
  • liaises with the University Impact Officer to drive Impact in response to the Faculty Research & KE Strategy
  • liaises with the Lecturer in Biology and Science Communication to create opportunities for Public Engagement and coordinates internal and external PE activities for the Faculty

Research Administrator

  • provides administrative support for all enquiry and application processes for the research degree programmes in the Faculty
  • acts as secretary to the Faculty Research Degrees Sub-Committee (RDSC).
  • liaises with the University Research Degrees Team to support these activities
  • co-ordinates the enrolment of visiting associate research students
  • manages studentship processes from advert to offer
